Yes, nature has something to do with it, some one might have better genes that another person. If you have better quality of resources available, the better chances for survival, or in this case, better scores on standardized tests. Looking at scores according to "race", there is definitely a disparity in the test scores. This also ties in with the concept of nature vs nurture, where again in this situation nurture wins.","dateCreated":"1295847023","smartDate":"Jan 23, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"admiller2","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/admiller2","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"33188526","body":"The SAT was originally intended to find the gifted students, despite class, race, and other social characteristics. Does this seem the case today?
\n
\nI think the SAT is both nature and nurture as well. It does not perform with full efficiency however. Proof that the SAT searches in the class gap is the fact that there are scholarships for minority students who score among a certain percentage of their ethnic peers. The scholarships are meant for students who have excelled, but possibly lacked the resources the have performed to their full potential.
\n
\nAt the same time however, the SAT is an ineffective method for the bright students who are poor test takers. They could be students at the top rank of their high school, yet because they do not display their intellect well on standardized tests, they are not rewarded. If the SAT is meant to find the brilliant students in the shadows, why are those left behind?
\n
\nThe SAT indirectly creates a racial gap in test scores. Students who attend higher income school districts are typically given more opportunities for SAT tutoring (something the creator of the SAT did not expect) and other preparation courses. Students who have the potential to perform well, but attend poorer schools are likely to get weeded out by the SAT system. It becomes a vicious cycle. As stated in the article, for every year the average schooling level of the population is raised, the country saw an average increase of 3.7% in long-term economic growth. With education having such a heavy impact on society, law makers and administrators need to develop new methods for national education, with particular support to the marginal testing school districts as well as low income school districts. The new plan should include (not to sound like a socialist here, but) redistribution of public funding for education, new training methods for teachers, different standardized testing strategies, and an over all reformed teaching method.
\n
\nThe current teaching method of most public schools in the US is characterized by the mass production assembly line like that of the Ford company in the 1920's. Current standardized evaluations do not test applications of math and science as much as they do memorized facts. The "60% of U.S high school graduates [who]go off to college, only about half of these are well enough prepared educationally and well enough supported financially to graduate with a degree" (16). To improve the long-term prosperity of the U.S, we need to put education as our number one priority. In economic term, investing in human capital is one way to get a greater output.
\nOf course monetary investment is crucial to solve this crisis. It is also necessary to have an equal distribution of funds among school districts. However, impoverished areas should have more funding rate as an initiative push to help poorer students.
\nOn the other hand, getting an college education is getting more and more expensive. How can we expect our students to get a degree while most of them have at least one job to try to pay for books, tuition, and other expenses? Why can't college be free and be more accessible? Yes, there are financial aids for poor students, but we tend to forget about students who are stuck in the middle of the spectrum.
\nLastly, good teachers are the key to to good education. Beside having to be qualified,teachers should make their students think critically,awaken their thirst for knowledge, and be the source for inspiration.","dateCreated":"1295858358","smartDate":"Jan 24, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"TuyenN","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/TuyenN","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"33072162","body":"The long term prosperity in the US should be improved by the educators because Compared to the beginning of the last century, 70% of the jobs in US need specialized skills and knowledge. And since the jobs keep changing from year to year, educators must prepare the students to work at jobs that are yet to exist, solve problems that are yet to be identified and use technology that are not yet invented.
\nHaving only about 70% high school graduates, statistics shows that by 2012 about 7 million jobs in science and technology field , green industries cannot be filled by the US workers. Though only one in ten low-income kindergardeners become college graduate, investing money alone would not solve the problem; more effort must be taken to improve the quality of education. The education system that was based on the factory model does not meet the demands of the changing information, technologies, jobs and social conditions. Therefore educators must teach the students focusing on the central concepts, helping students to think critically and to learn for themselves to meet the demands if this changing world.

\nI really like your comparison of the current teaching method with the ford assembly line and I completely agree. It has become somewhat of a culture in public schools for multiple choice tests. They are liked by teachers and students alike, teachers for the ease in grading and students for the ease in taking. They require no kind of deep thought formulation. Students can get away with not knowing or understanding the material. The questions are mostly about memorization rather than application. In addition, multiple choice test teach process of elimination so that if the student doesnt know the answer, the student can eliminate and walk away without fully understanding the material being tested.","dateCreated":"1296010490","smartDate":"Jan 25, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"HalaSiddiqui","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/HalaSiddiqui","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"33192876","body":"admiller2

\nI agree with you, schools these days lack qualified teachers. Specially in a system where the teaching is not student based. The amount of knowledge the students receive is limited, because the teachers can teach only what they know. Therefore teaching must be student based because they allow the students to explore and think about the subject which, is better than having someone impart what they know about the subject","dateCreated":"1296048526","smartDate":"Jan 26, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Ebbybaby","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Ebbybaby","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"33194922","body":"Admiller2, you put a lot of emphasis on qualified teachers, and I agree with you. However, the role of teaching should be much more than just teaching facts and methods. As educators, teachers should also be the source of comfort, guidance, and support for their students. In a modern world where both parents work to support a family is very common, teachers should take some of the responsibility that their parents cannot fulfill.","dateCreated":"1296051503","smartDate":"Jan 26, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"TuyenN","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/TuyenN","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
